Why A Disney Cruise Is More Magical Than The Parks Right Now
A Disney cruise is one of the more expensive sailing vacations when compared to other cruise lines. But for those looking for a magical vacation, it might represent a better option than the Disney parks right now. Here's why.
I've made no secret of my love for all things Disney as the travel editor of Brad's Deals. We've written about how to get to Disney World for free, what it was like when the parks reopened during the pandemic, and more through the years. Unfortunately, the experience at the Disney parks is not the same as it was in years past, requiring a lot of upfront planning and vacation dollars due to inflation and the rising cost of travel.
That's why I want to talk about Disney Cruise Line. Even as a fan of Disney and of cruising, I've scoffed at the price of a Disney cruise, which is nearly double the price of similar itineraries on competing cruise lines! But, having just taken my first Disney cruise, I must say, it's worth the price. And for families, it is a great option when compared to visiting the Disney parks right now. Let's dig into why.
Lack of Crowds
Walt Disney World is absolutely packed right now, requiring months of planning to maximize your time. Once you're there, you'll need to compete with the other park guests for Genie+ reservations if you opt for the upcharge, which replaced Disney's free Fastpass system last year. Even then, reservations run out. And if you want a sit-down restaurant reservation at any of the popular restaurants, that'll require logging in 60 days before your vacation to even have a shot at getting one.
Onboard a Disney ship, you'll get a similar Disney experience, but with less planning required. Capacity is limited to the number of people the ship can fit and the ship was designed with that in mind. Dinner is at a set time and the table is always reserved for your family. In my opinion, the food quality is also a big step up from the parks.
There are some things you can reserve in advance, like cabanas on Disney's private island Castaway Cay, but for the most part, a Disney cruise is a stress-free experience once you're onboard. Castaway Cay is also so large that they have a 5k running course, so there's plenty of space for the whole ship to spread out across the island. If you're an adult cruising without kids or looking for something to do while your kids are in the kids-only Oceaneer's Club, there are lots of spaces adult-only spaces onboard.
Price
Compared to current Disney World pricing, a Disney cruise represents a much better value. Yes, you won't have those classic Disney World attractions onboard, but you do have a lot of items included that aren't available at the parks.
The pricing quoted on Disney Cruise Line's website is all-inclusive for two people, including taxes, fees, and port charges. The lowest price for an inside cabin I could find for a Disney cruise is about $400 per night. That matches what many Disney park hotels are charging right now with their increased pricing. And that's before you add in food, drink, and park tickets!
On a Disney ship, the $400 price point includes your room, incredibly attentive service (like twice-daily housekeeping), sit-down meals at the ship's restaurants and buffet, and non-alcoholic beverages. Keep in mind that specialty restaurants, specialty coffees, and alcohol are an extra charge.
How to Cruise During COVID
Access To Magical Experiences
No company does entertainment better than Disney, and I should've reminded myself of this before stepping onboard the Disney Dream. Having taken a number of cruises recently, I'm reminded that cruise ship entertainment is usually "just ok". Onboard the Disney Dream, the nightly entertainment in the theater rivaled shows on land.
Another perk to cruising: In the parks, you're often fighting the other park guests for some face time with the Mouse. On a Disney ship, you're constantly running into your favorite Disney characters. The main atrium serves as a meeting ground of sorts, and you'll see them all day and night.
A Cruise Is Actually Relaxing
Here's a fact that was true even before Disney World got crazy expensive recently. A cruise is always going to be more relaxing than a trip to the parks. Without the need to wake up early and beat the crowds to be first in line for Space Mountain, you can choose to sleep in and make your own schedule. With lots of activities throughout the day, you can decide what you want your day to be. And if that's sitting on your balcony and reading a book, so be it!
Overall, I can't say enough good things about my time onboard the Disney Dream. If you're looking for great cruise deals, check out our best deals on cruises and cruise vacations below. Happy sailing!
